🦠 Global Virus Alert 2025: Chikungunya Fever Outbreak in China
1. What Happened
In 2025, a major outbreak of the Chikungunya virus was reported in southern China, especially in Guangdong Province.
Thousands of people have been infected since June 2025.
The virus spreads through mosquito bites, mainly by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes.
It is not spread directly from person to person.
2. Key Symptoms and Facts
Sudden high fever
Severe joint pain (especially in hands, knees, and ankles)
Headache, fatigue, and skin rash
Most people recover within 7–10 days
In some cases, joint pain may continue for weeks or months
3. Why This Outbreak Happened
Heavy rainfall and flooding created stagnant water, which helped mosquitoes breed faster.
The virus was not common in China before, so people had little or no immunity.
Rapid urban growth and changing climate conditions also helped the virus spread.
4. How to Stay Safe
Wear long-sleeved clothes and use mosquito repellent.
Keep your surroundings clean and avoid stagnant water.
Cover water containers and clean coolers and buckets regularly.
If you have fever with severe joint pain, see a doctor immediately.
Be extra careful while traveling to mosquito-affected areas.
5. Situation in India
So far, India has not seen a large Chikungunya outbreak in 2025.
However, since mosquito-borne diseases are common during monsoon season, it’s important to remain
alert and follow preventive measures.
